90-mln-year-oldfossilbonesinChinabelongtonewdinosaurspecies:paleontologists_GuangmingOnlineNANCHANG,Jan.30(Xinhua)--Chinesepaleontologistshavediscovereddinosaurfossilbonesdatingback90millionyearstotheCretaceousperiod,believedtobeanewspeciesthatwaslaternamed"Gandititancavocaudatus."TheseboneswerefoundataconstructionsiteinGanxianDistrictinthecityofGanzhou,eastChina'sJiangxiProvince,inJune2021,saidWangLingyun,deputycuratoroftheJiangxiGeologicalMuseum.Themuseum,togetherwiththeChinaUniversityofGeosciences(CUG)(Wuhan)andJiangxiGeologicalSurveyandExplorationInstitute,jointlystartedconductingrestorationandresearchworklaterthesameyear.Thespecies,anewtitanosauriansauropod,belongstoagianttypeofdinosaurcalledTitanosauria,saidHanFenglu,teamleaderoftheprojectfromCUG(Wuhan)incentralChina'sHubeiProvince.Thediscoveredbonesintotalaccountforabout40percentofadinosaur'sskeleton,whichisrareintheworldfortheirintegrityanddelicacy,saidHan.Amongthebonesaresixarticulatedcervicalvertebrae,twopartialdorsalvertebrae,andacompletesacrumpreservedinarticulationwiththefirst17caudalvertebraeandpartoftherightpelvis.Thewell-preservedvertebralcolumnallowsanaccurateestimationofatotalbodylengthof14meters,whichisrelativelysmallamongsauropods,accordingtoHan.Thediscovery,publishedinthelatestJournalofSystematicPalaeontologyonJan.17,isofgreatsignificanceforstudyingtheevolutionandpaleogeographicdistributionofthespeciesintheCretaceousperiod.Editor:DisclaimerTheviewsandopinionsexpressedinthisarticlearethoseoftheauthor's,GMW.cnmakesnorepresentationsastoaccuracy,suitability,orvalidityofanyinformationonthissiteandwillnotbeliableforanyerrors,omissions,ordelaysinthisinformation.
